"Respect, love and laugh, don't cry" are the secrets to a long and happy marriage, say Oamaru's Pat and Selwyn Stanger.

The couple, who were married at St Paul's Church in Oamaru and lived at Weston for 40 years before retiring in Oamaru, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary yesterday.

They marked the occasion at the Star and Garter, where they held their wedding reception 65 years ago.

Parents to six children, and grand parents of 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grand children, the couple said their years together had been enhanced by their loving family and many happy times spent with friends, particularly touring in their campervan.
